Archdiocese of Southwark Caritas Roadshow, ‘Being a Church for the Poor’

A Church for the Poor – Southwark Caritas Roadshow at St Peter’s Church, Woolwich New Road, Woolwich, London SE18 6EF on Saturday 21 June from 10.30 to 3.30. This free event will explore how we can answer Pope Francis’s call to be “church for the poor” through promoting social action and social justice. Bishop Pat Lynch will speak about our local needs in south London. The purpose of the day is to celebrate and share experience with other volunteers, parishioners and practitioners. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Three parishioners from St Anthony’s will hold a workshop at the conference based on our parish mission in the year of faith 2012/13. The mission was our response to Pope Benedict’s proclamation of the year of faith. We linked life in the early church with life in the church now and how to build the church of the future. A small core group and a large group of parishioners young and old organised and took part in events. The four pillars of the mission were Welcome, Prayer, Teaching and learning and Outreach. We had invited speakers, a pilgrimage to Rome and an exhibition of parish groups at Pentecost. We had inspiring youth events – a workshop with scripture and youth Masses at Pentecost and in November. The effect of the mission has been to breathe new life into the members of the parish. We are better prepared to do God’s work in the world.

The parish pastoral team will report back on the conference and the workshop.
