THE SEVENTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR

Seventh Sunday (A)

Mass Readings: 139 – 142

Order of Mass: Pages 7- 60

God created man in his own image and likeness. In this sharing of divine nature of God, he invite us to a life of holiness as he is holy. The mortal man must strive to be holy  in order to be truly adopted sons and daughters of God. The holiness of God is all encompassing; tolerating, enduring and loving. He is compassionate and loving.

It is the wish of God that we share  in his nature. Thus, in the first reading, God commanded his chosen people to remain holy, tolerant and forgiving. The essence of this message was because the people of Israel were surrounded by other pagan nations; ungodly  and unholy people. These might influence them and endanger the purity of their religion. They must remain a distinct nation; wholly and dedicated to the true God.

In the second reading and also in the gospel, as Christians, we are called to be a distinct people, reserved and preserved for God. Thus, we are God’s temple. The dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. We must not defile it. Christ charges us to continue to practise sincere forgiveness, love and tolerance. Vengeance must not be defined in our lives. Christ abrogated the Mosaic laws of retaliation “lex talionis”; an eye for an eye.

A true Christian must strive to imitate the infinitely loving, infinitely merciful, infinitely holy and infinitely forgiving father.
