Mass Readings: Pages 149 – 152
Order of Mass: Pages 6 – 60
Jesus had some harsh criticism to make of the Scribes and Pharisees. He called them hypocrites, because they didn’t practise what they preached. Which of us can truthfully say that our deeds match our words? Each and every time we come to celebrate the Eucharist we are called by God to a life of truth and genuine goodness.
First reading: The prophet berates the priests of his day for failing to live up to their calling.
Second Reading: Paul reminds us the Thessalonians of his love and care for them, and how hard he worked to bring them the Good News.
Gospel: Jesus launches a strong attack on the Scribes and Pharisees, but what he says important to us.
Malachi attacks the laxity and carelessness that have set in regarding morality and worship. He specially takes the priests to task, berating them for not living up to their .calling, and thus being responsible for erosion of faith among people.
In the Gospel we see how strong Jesus was in his criticism of those who use religion to gain spiritual power, and who do not live what is in the heart of religion: love and compassion, justice and faith.
Matthew applies it to Christian leaders, who are in danger of repeating the mistakes of the Pharisees. The message is as relevant now as it was back then.
