DEDICATION of the LATERAN BASILICA

This Feast replaces the Sunday of the Year. The Church teaches us that the Catholic Church exists both in the local church (ie the diocese) and globally (centred round the Pope).

To indicate this we celebrate each year the Feast of the Dedication of our Cathedral (last Friday, 7th November) and the Feast of the Dedication of the Pope’s Cathedral, today.

His Cathedral is not St Peter’s, in the Vatican, as you might think, but St John Lateran, in Rome. St George’s Cathedral is the mother church of our diocese of Southwark; St John Lateran is the mother church of all Christianity.
