The feast of St. Peter and St. Paul is always seen as great feast of the Church which in so many ways owes its growth and development to their writings and leadership. In earlier days, before the liturgy changes of Vatican II, it always seemed as though 29th June was really honouring St. Peter, and St. Paul had a follow up feast on the 30th June. This is now different and we can honour both on the same day.
It remains true that the two are very different characters, had very different origins in Israel ands very different summonses by Jesus Christ. Simon, a fisherman, is first told of Jesus by Andrew who comes to him after spending a day with John in Jesus’ company. ‘We have seen the messiah’ Andrew declares. But then Jesus himself calls Simon from his nets and names him Peter, the rock on which he will build his Church. Thenceforth, Peter, a most endearing character, shows his impetuosity, his total commitment, his weakness and denial, his repentance and reinstatement in love and service and finally his leadership and ultimate humility in dying for Christ.
Peter is such a wonderful character and so utterly human, his character deserves from us a deeper insight through study of him in Scripture and early life of the Church and in meditation on him. He should be very important, very uplifting and very consoling in our attempts to stay close Jesus and his Church.
The strong, fiery, learned and crusading character of Saul, who also had his name changed to Paul, is a contrast to Peter and also furnishes a teaching which gives a very strong and even dominant line to guide and lead the Church. Both his preaching and his writings are of immense importance in the whole life of the Church. Like Peter, only in a way more so, he should hold our attention and take our time in prayer and study of him and his teaching. We need the guidance of the Spirit and much time to attempt to plumb his depth.
