Thirtieth Sunday (A)

Mass Readings: Pages: 146 – 149

Order of Mass: Pages 7 – 60

+++++++++++

First Reading: this is part of the Sinai covenant God established with Moses, one of the covenants referred to in the phrase “time and again you offered them covenants” in Eucharistic Prayer IV.

Old Testament religion was not just about ritual; there was a strong ethical component, especially concerning justice and economic assistance for the poor.

Psalm: this psalm of praise of God is also – mysteriously – found almost word for word in 2 Samuel 22.

Second Reading: St Paul praises the faith of the Thessalonian Christians, who have converted from their former idolatry. The strength of their faith “has spread everywhere”.

Gospel: Jesus summarises the Law in the double commandment of love: we must love God and love neighbour, the two are inextricable. St John Chrysostom said: “to love God is to love one’s neighbour”. Perhaps we might take some time this week to reflect on our own love of God and of neighbour.

Tickets will cost £4 on the door. The concert will begin at 7pm on Sunday 26th October in the church. There will also be a raffle.
If anyone can kindly donate prizes for the raffle I would be very grateful. Thank you.

Congratulations: We congratulate Richard and Joan Maple who will be celebrating their 60th Wedding Anniversary this weekend.

Altar Servers: There will be two altar server training sessions this week during the half term holiday. One on Tuesday 28th and one on Thursday 30th October at 11.30am in the Church. It is important to try and attend one of these sessions. Thank you.

Choir Practice: There will be a choir practice on Thursday 30th October at 6.30pm in the Church. This is to prepare for next Sunday’s Family Mass. At this practise we will also begin preparing music for a Christmas Carol service which will be held on Sunday 14th December. All are welcome to join. Musicians are also welcome to come. If you are interested in joining the Carol Service but cannot attend Thursday’s practice, please contact Mary at mc84ok@gmail.com.

Knights of St Columba Barn Dance: The Knights of St Columba would like to thank the parish for their fantastic support at the Barn Dance. Over £500 has been raised, split equally between the Knights and Mary’s Meals charities.

Repository: Christmas items are now available. Please do take a look.

If you can bring drinks for the Bottle Stall and good quality items for the Tombola and Lucky Dip that would be appreciated. For a successful fair, we need appealing items which will attract buyers and help raise funds for the Church. Please leave items in the box in the narthex.

HCPT— Group 30: Group 30 has been going to Lourdes every Easter since 1968. Today, the group has reached a crossroads. Several of our established helpers now have families and are unable to travel with us anymore. Without helpers we cannot take children to Lourdes. The group is now in real danger of folding. Helpers pay their own fares (currently about £700) but we may be able to financially assist students. We travel by plane to Lourdes on the Saturday before Easter returning a week later. I need about 8 new helpers to form a group. If you are interested in becoming a helper with Group 30 please contact Patrick Cowlard on: 020 8659 5829 or by email: jpcowlard@btinternet.com
