Twenty-fourth Sunday

First Reading: traditionally we understand these words to apply to Jesus and His passion.  But we can also take them as applying to individual Christian disciples who suffer and to suffering Christian communities (such as those suffering severe persecution in many parts of the Middle East today; visit www.acnuk.org for the latest news).

Psalm:  a simple prayer of thanks to God after escape from death by sickness, accident, or malice.

Second Reading: faith must be accompanied by good works, especially for the poor who lack clothes and food .

Gospel: this episode at Caesarea Philippi is the half-way point in Mark’s Gospel; up to now we have been hearing about Jesus’ ministry in Galilee; from now on He will turn towards Jerusalem.  It addresses two questions.  First, who is Jesus?  He is the Christ, the Anointed One destined to suffer, die, and rise again.  Secondly, who are we?  We are Christians, disciples of Jesus Christ, who must also die to self and take up our cross to follow Him.

Last Sunday’s collections: The 1st collection was £878.74p (including Gift Aided  £377.15p).  The 2nd collection for Parish Funds was £80.86p. Thank you for your generosity.   Today’s  2nd  collection is for Racial Justice Day.

Recently Deceased: Please pray for the soul and family of Philip Andrew McGowan who died recently.  The funeral will be at West Norwood Crematorium on Wednesday 23rd September at 2.45pm.

Blessed Sacrament: Please note that Silent Adoration will be on Sundays at 4pm followed by Benediction at 4.45pm.

Mass for the Sick: The Mass for the Sick will be on Saturday 26th September at 11am.  All are welcome.

UCM: The next meeting will be on Monday 21st September at 7.30pm.  We will be holding our annual Harvest Supper so please bring a dish to share.

RCIA: The classes for those who wish to become catholics will begin soon.  So if you are an adult who would like to become a Catholic or are a  baptised Catholic who has not received First Holy Communion or Confirmation or if you are baptised in another church and would like to become a Catholic then please fill in an RCIA application form (forms available in the narthex) and give it to one of the clergy.

Holy Communion: We have received a large number of application forms for First Confessions and First Holy Communions.  If you would like your child to be enrolled on the next programme then please do make an appointment to see Father Sunith as soon as possible.
Please note that you should not attend the classes or parents meetings without having first completed an application form or meeting with Father Sunith.

Missio/APF (Red Boxes): There are emptied red boxes awaiting collection on a table in the narthex.  Thank you for your continuing support.

African Catholic Misson General Meeting: The 18th Pan-African Annual Mass will be held on Sunday 20th September 2015, at 3pm followed by a Reception at the St George’s Cathedral, Lambeth Road, Southwark SE1 7HY. The main celebrant is Bishop Patrick Lynch, Chairman of the Bishops’ Committee for Migrants. Seven African Community Choirs will be in attendance and everyone is cordially invited to attend.

The Rosary Crusade of Reparation: On 10th October the Rosary Crusade will process following a route from Westminster Cathedral to the Brompton Oratory which is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.  Please see the noticeboard for further information.

Parish Barn Dance: Following last year’s highly successful barn dance, the Knights of St Columba are repeating the event this year on Friday 23rd October at the Royston Club.  Please keep the evening free on your calendar.  More details to follow nearer the date.

Virgo Fidelis: The Open Evenings and Morning for Year 7 entrants for September 2016 will be on Wednesday 16th September, Thursday 1st October from 5.30 to 8.30pm and also Saturday 3rd October from 10am until 12noon (Post 16s are also invited to visit on the Saturday morning).

Bishop Thomas Grant School: The Open Mornings will be from 9.30am until 12 noon on Tuesday 15th September, Wednesday 23rd September and Thursday 1st October.  Please arrive promptly at 9.30am.  The Open Evenings will begin at 6.30pm until 9pm on Wednesday 16th September and Thursday 8th October.  The sixth form open evening will be on Monday 19th October at 6.30pm until 9pm.

St Mary’s Catholic High School: The Open Morning is on Wednesday 23rd September from 9 – 10.30am (by appt only), the Open Evening is on Thursday 24th September from 6.30pm – 8.30pm.
