Twenty-sixth Sunday

Twenty-sixth Sunday

First Reading: the parallels between Moses and Jesus are obvious; Jesus was consciously basing his ministry on that of Moses; in fact, Jesus is the new Moses.  Moses is an Egyptian name meaning ‘child of God’.

Psalm: this reminds us that God’s law is perfect.  If we find ourselves at odds with God’s commandments, it we who are at fault, not God.

Second Reading: James issues a warning to the rich. What makes things worse is when the rich gain their riches by injustice and oppression of the poor.

Gospel: Christ’s severe words about cutting hands or feet off and tearing eyes out should be taken not literally but seriously.  It is a very serious obstacle to our entering heaven if we are the cause of other people being prevented from entering heaven, by our words or by our immoral behaviour.

By Fr David Gibbons, Centre for Catholic Formation

Gift Aid: We would like to say a big thank you to all parishioners who have signed up for our Gift Aid Scheme. We have just received a tax refund cheque for £9,587.48p from HMRC for the tax year 2014/15. This bonus income for the parish has been made possible because parishioners who pay income tax have filled in and signed  a Gift Aid Declaration form and it has not cost them a penny more.

If you pay tax please consider filling in a Gift Aid Declaration form.

Sunday Teas:

This Sunday’s teas will be served by the UCM (in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support).

Next Sunday’s teas will be served by the Flower Arrangers.

Thank you to all those who help out with the Sunday Teas.

Last Sunday’s collections: The 1st collection was £973.75p (including Gift Aided  £391.08p). The 2nd collection for Parish Funds was £61.50p. Thank you for your generosity.  Today’s  2nd  collection is for CAFOD/Autumn Family Fast Day.

Blessed Sacrament: Please note that Silent Adoration will be on Sundays at 4pm followed by Benediction at 4.45pm.

RCIA: The classes for those who wish to become Catholics will begin soon.  So if you are an adult who would like to become a Catholic or are a  baptised Catholic who has not received First Holy Communion or Confirmation or if you are baptised in another church and would like to become a Catholic then please fill in an RCIA application form (forms available in the narthex) and give it to one of the clergy.

Baptism Preparation  classes will be on 5th, 12th and 19th of October at 7.30 pm in the Parish Centre.

Holy Communion: We have received a large number of application forms for First Confessions and First Holy Communions.  If you would like your child to be enrolled on the next programme then please do make an appointment to see Father Sunith as soon as possible.
Please note that you should not attend the classes or parents meetings without having first completed an application form or meeting with Father Sunith.

Christmas Fair: If you would like to help out with this year’s Christmas Fair there will be a meeting within the next few weeks to discuss planned events.  All offers of help are very much welcome and appreciated.  There will be meeting on the 29th at 8.00pm in the Parish Centre.
