Twenty-seventh Sunday

Mass Readings: Page 140 – 143

Order of Mass: Pages 7– 47

First Reading: this reading is placed before the Gospel to remind us that marriage is not the creation of the Church or even of Jesus Christ.  Rather, “God himself is the author of marriage” (Gaudium et Spes § 48)

Psalm:  this psalm asks God for a Zion (Jerusalem, or, we would say, the church, the new Jerusalem) full of god-fearing, happy and peaceful families.

Second Reading:  this is the first in a series of Readings from the letter to the Hebrews.  Perhaps based on Psalm 8, the idea is that through Christ’s suffering we can become part of God’s family, brothers and sisters of Christ.

Gospel:  some Pharisees try to trap Jesus, but His response is clear and uncompromising: if remarriage follows divorce it is an act of adultery against the previous spouse.  This is not a new law promulgated by Jesus but a restatement of God’s will.

The Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops begins today, to study the theme “The vocation and mission of the family in the church and the modern world.”  Today’s Mass Readings are a suitable place to start.

By Fr David Gibbons, Centre for Catholic Formation

Gift Aid: We would like to say a big thank you to all parishioners who have signed up for our Gift Aid Scheme. We have recently received a tax refund cheque for £9,587.48p from HMRC for the tax year 2014/15.    This bonus income for the parish has been made possible because parishioners who pay income tax have filled in and signed  a Gift Aid Declaration form and it has not cost them a penny more.

If you pay tax please consider filling in a Gift Aid Declaration. Forms are available in the church porch.

Sunday Teas:

This Sunday’s teas will be served by the Flower Arrangers.

Next Sunday’s teas will be served by the UCM.

Thank you to all those who help out with the Sunday Teas.
