Twenty-eighth Sunday

Mass Readings: Page 143 – 146

Order of Mass: Pages 7– 47

First Reading: riches – and indeed health and beauty – are as nothing compared to Wisdom.  For Christians, Wisdom in the Old Testament refers to Jesus Christ.  Hence the great basilica in Constantinople (now Istanbul) ‘Hagia Sophia’ was dedicated to the Wisdom of God, the second person of the Trinity.

Psalm:  amid the brevity and cares of life we pray for wisdom and joy.

Second Reading:  the author describes the word of God.  Is this the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ?

Gospel: Jesus tells the rich young man to sell everything he owns and give the money to the poor, and then to follow Him.  Are we to take this literally, that every Christian should give their possessions away?  Or does it apply only to certain people, such as those in religious orders who take the vow of poverty?  Or does it mean that each Christian should eliminate their particular impediment from following Jesus (which might be wealth, or lust, or sinfulness, or …..).

By Fr David Gibbons, Centre for Catholic Formation

Gift Aid: We would like to say a big thank you to all parishioners who have signed up for our Gift Aid Scheme. We have recently received a tax refund cheque for £9,587.48p from HMRC for the tax year 2014/15.    This bonus income for the parish has been made possible because parishioners who pay income tax have filled in and signed  a Gift Aid Declaration form and it has not cost them a penny more.

If you pay tax please consider filling in a Gift Aid Declaration. Forms are available in the church porch.

Sunday Teas:

This Sunday’s teas will be served by the UCM.

Next Sunday’s teas will be served by the French Speaking Prayer Group.

Thank you to all those who help out with the Sunday Teas.

Last Sunday’s collections: The 1st collection was £898.68p (including Gift Aided  £382.30p). The 2nd collection for CAFOD/Family Fast Day  was £143.00p. Thank you for your generosity.  The 2nd collection today will be in support of Prisoners and their families. The 2nd collection next week will be for APF/Missio (Home Mission Sunday).

Recently Deceased: Please pray for the soul and family of Peter Ashley McGowan.  The funeral service will be on Thursday 15th October at 1pm followed by the burial at Elmer’s End Cemetery at 2.15pm.

Blessed Sacrament: Please note that Silent Adoration will be on Sundays at 4pm followed by Benediction at 4.45pm.

Baptism Preparation Classes: The dates for the next two (of three) classes will be on the 12th and 19th October at 7.30pm in the Parish Centre.  Please note that it is important to have attended ALL three classes.

RCIA: The classes for those who wish to become Catholics will begin soon.  So if you are an adult who would like to become a Catholic or are a  baptised Catholic who has not received First Holy Communion or Confirmation or if you are baptised in another church and would like to become a Catholic then please fill in an RCIA application form (forms available in the narthex) and give it to one of the clergy.  RCIA classes are being held every Thursday at 7.30pm in the Presbytery.

The Sacrament of Marriage in 2015: Please pray for Ndidi Obiago and David Scott; Kobie Bernice and Vanessa Richardson; Anca Michaela Fazacas and Williams Akosim.
We congratulate these three couples on their marriages and pray that their unions will be long and happy ones.

Parish Christmas Fair: We are now collecting items for the Christmas Fair.  If you have any unwanted gifts or good quality items that would attract people to a stall (for example, gifts sets or bottles) then please do donate them by leaving them in the box in the narthex.  For a successful fair, we need appealing items which will attract buyers and help raise funds for the Church.  Thank you.

Mount Street Jesuit Centre: Please see the Mount Street Jesuit Centre’s website www.mountstreet.info or contact them on 020 7495 1673 to find out about all their October events.

Parish Barn Dance: Following last year’s highly successful barn dance, the Knights of St Columba are repeating the event this year on Friday 23rd October at the Royston Club.  Tickets are now on sale and can be bought from the Knights after mass.

Pilgrim and Magnificat: The Pilgrim for Octobe is now available.  Please take one.

The Magnificat for October/November is also now available.

Christmas: There are many Christmas items now on sale in the repository.  Please do take a look and see what there is on offer.

Recycling:  Please do keep donating your old mobile phones and printer ink cartridges (except Epson) but please no printer toner cartridges.  Thank you.

Please see the notice board for details of open events at schools.

If you want to see a priest then please phone and make an appointment.

Notices for the newsletter need to be emailed/posted to the presbytery by 6pm on Thursdays.
