The Ascension of the Lord

Ascension of the Lord

Mass Readings: Pages 277 – 280

Order of Mass: Pages 6 – 60

First Reading:  only Luke relates Christ’s Ascension, but he does so twice, first in today’s Gospel and secondly at the beginning of The Acts of the Apostles.  Christ’s resurrection appearances could not go on for ever; He had to return to the glory which was His.

Psalm:  this is the psalm for the feast of the Ascension; in it we express our joy that Christ has thrown off the chains of place and time and is back on His throne in heaven.

Second Reading:  either from St Paul’s letter to the Ephesians (the Father places Christ at his right hand in heaven) or from the letter to the Hebrews (Christ has entered the true sanctuary in heaven itself).

Gospel:  at the end of His final resurrection appearance Christ returns to heaven.
