The Eleventh Sunday

Eleventh Sunday

First Reading: Ezekiel predicts God’s restoration of Judah, using the imagery of planting a cedar tree.  These Old Testament texts provide the background for Jesus’ words in the Gospel.

Psalm:  this psalm, which has been described as ‘the song of a happy man’, picks up the image of the cedar tree from the First Reading.

Second Reading:  for the next few Sundays we hear St Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians.  It seems that the church in Corinth was beset by various problems, including disunity, and Paul had to write to them twice.  In today’s extract the contrast between our present, bodily desires and our future fulfilment in Christ is typical of St Paul.

Gospel:  Jesus speaks to the crowds about the kingdom of God in parables.  Parables are little stories, which reveal some aspect of God and his kingdom, and which invite us to reflect upon them and apply them to our own situation.  The parables of the seed growing of itself and of the mustard seed should give us hope and encouragement in our efforts at spreading the Good News.

This Weekend – Penge Festival Concert: As part of our engagement with our wider community we will be hosting a free concert during the Penge Festival.  The concert will be given by the Norwood Wind Ensemble and will feature a programme of music from the shows, classical pieces and some other well known tunes.  During the interval there will be tea and cakes in the Parish garden (in the Parish Centre if the weather is bad).  The theme for this year’s festival is ‘heritage’ and the Festival Committee is raising money to go towards renovating our local heritage in Penge.  There will therefore be a collection outside Church at the end of the event for voluntary contributions.  The concert will be this Sunday at 2pm (Sunday 14th June).  Please do come along for what will be an entertaining and worthwhile event.
