Fifth Sunday of Easter

Mass Readings: Pages 271 – 273

Order of Mass: Pages 6 – 60

First Reading:  St Paul makes it clear that Christian life must be as part of a community.  As St Cyprian said, ‘no one can have God for his father unless he has the Church for his mother’.

Psalm: in this psalm we reflect on what God has done for us.

Second Reading:  the ‘new heaven and the new earth’ refers to God’s renewal of his creation: from now on all nations will share in the promises made to the old covenant people (the Jews) and all sorrow, suffering, and death are banished for ever in the new Jerusalem.

Gospel:  the Gospels for the next Sundays come from Jesus’ farewell discourse at the Last Supper.  Here He gives the new commandment, to love one another, that is to love our fellow disciples.

Fr David Gibbons,

Centre for Catholic Formation
