Sixth Sunday of Easter
Mass Readings: Page 266 – 268
Order of Mass: Pages 7– 47
First Reading: even as Peter was speaking the Holy Spirit did amazing things and came upon Cornelius and his companions, final proof that Christianity was for the pagans or Gentiles as well, not just the Jewish people.
Psalm: the psalm continues the idea that Christ (‘the Lord’) came to bring salvation to all peoples.
Second Reading: continuing his letter on the theme of love, St John stresses the primacy of God’s love, who showed his love for us by sending his only Son.
Gospel: following on from the imagery of the vine and the branches, Christ gives His disciples the commandment to love one another, and also gives the obligation “to go and out bear fruit, fruit that will last”. Each follower of Christ must ask him/herself: do I produce fruit or am I a dead branch?
