Third Sunday of Easter

Mass Readings: Page 258 – 261

Order of Mass: Pages 7– 47

First Reading: in his homily St Peter says that for the people of Israel the only proper response to the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ is repentance, for the resurrection has the power to wipe out their sins.

The Psalm has been described by one commentator as a ‘happy, confident little evening psalm’.

Second Reading:  both truth and love are found only when we keep God’s commandments.  St John also refers to Christ’s role as the sacrificing priest.

Gospel:  the risen Jesus appears to the disciples, who are not surprisingly alarmed and frightened.  But He is no ghost: He can be touched and He eats fish.  He explains everything to them, and then tells them that they are to be witnesses.

By Fr David Gibbons, Centre for Catholic Formation
