Twelfth Sunday
First Reading: this is an extract (from chapter 38 of Job, not chapter 3 as it says in the Lectionary) from God’s explanation to Job for his suffering. In describing his role in creating the waters, God uses the words of parental discipline: he is like a father who sets boundaries for his children.
Psalm: despite our stormy passage through life, God’s love is inexhaustible.
The Second Reading: Eucharistic Prayer IV is very suitable today, as the phrase ‘and that we might live no longer for ourselves but for him who died and rose again for us’ is taken from this passage.
Gospel: the familiar story of Christ stilling the storm can be interpreted in many different ways. If the boat is taken as representing the Church, this story reassures us that in times of persecution and distress Jesus is ruler of nature and history and is always present with us, in the midst of our troubles. Likewise, if we have difficulties in our own personal lives we can turn to the Lord for help. This miracle (not a healing one) gives us some insight into Jesus Christ’s true nature, divine as well as human.
