Thirty-third Sunday
Mass Readings: Page 157 – 160
Order of Mass: Pages 7– 47
First Reading: this vision of the end of time and what we would call the Day of Judgement contains the first reference in the Old Testament to belief in the resurrection of the dead.
Psalm: union with God will prove stronger than death.
Second Reading: given this text, why do Catholic priests stand at the Altar each day offering the sacrifice of the Mass? Because they are offering the one sacrifice of Christ, which alone can forgive sins.
Gospel: chapter 13 of Mark is often called the ‘Little Apocalypse’ as it looks to the end of time. In today’s Gospel, using language from the Old Testament (such as today’s First Reading from Daniel), Jesus teaches about the coming of the Son of Man, and the need for watchfulness (the parable of the fig tree). That the end will come is certain; but when the Son of Man will return we do not know.
