Twenty-fourth Sunday
Mass Readings: Pages 128 – 131
Order of Mass: Pages 6 – 60
First Reading: In refusing to forgive those who have sinned against us, we exclude ourselves from receiving God’s forgiveness for our sins.
Second Reading: The entire existence of a Christian is for Christ and for others.
Gospel: We must be willing to extend to others the generous forgiveness God extends to us.
Today’s Gospel raises the question of sin between brothers and sisters, that is, fellow Christians. The psalm talks about the greatness of God’s forgiveness . Anyone who is forgiven has an obligation to forgive. If we cannot bring ourselves to do this, it is an indication that we really haven’t experienced God’s forgiveness. The position of the servant in Jesus’ story was absolutely hopeless. He owed the king so much money that even if he worked forever, he would not be able to repay him. This is our situation before God. We can not win God’s forgiveness. All we can do is plead his mercy.
